Military, travel time and moving to Ft. Belvoir,VA.

Anyone that lives within Northern Virginia knows that if you are going to be driving back and forth to work traffic can sometimes make you want to scream...okay maybe all the time...especially if your not use to any traffic whatsoever. However, travel time can be reduced depending on where you reside.

What is constant that I always hear from service members that are moving here, is that they want to live near the base they will be assigned to and I certainly understand. You have to be at your place of duty at a specified time, no excuses, or you can get in a whole heap of trouble...I know, been there, done that.  Remember, in Northern Virginia, you either sacrifice time or expense, one or the other.

Ft. Belvoir, VA is located in Lorton,VA of Fairfax County.  Once you compare how much housing allowance you are going to receive and what you actually make, you may want to move somewhere that is more affordable.  Don’t get me wrong, many service members do choose to live near and they do because it is your choice.  I just want you to keep your options open. Understand that if you consider residing in
Dumfries or Woodbridge of Prince William County, where cost of living is a little more affordable, the commute is not that far away. Give or take 30-40 minutes, if you take I-95 approximately the same if you travel on Route 1.

Route 1 will take you all the way into Ft Belvoir. If you have to be in before 6 am. You have the HOV lane to use. If you work hrs end at a certain time you can take it back to get home. Click on the URL for information concerning HOV lanes. http://www.virginiadot.org/travel/hov-default.asp

There are military that work at the Pentagon, Quantico, Ft. Myers that live all over Prince William County...you’d be surprised. I know it can be hard to envision, but once you get here you will have a better understanding. Take my advice from a retired vet. I’ve lived here since April 1998.

I know that if I lived in Virginia south of DC I would have to take mass transit.  Friday nights passing through on my way south are impossible.

Cheryl - I really liked your map, and how you identified the different locations that people have to commute to.  I loved your insight on commuting and that's important when you're buying a home!

You can not try to sell in an area you do not know, and Cheryl you know so much! That map is great, as well as your insight on commuting in the area.
